In vivo assay for mechanotransduction activity. (A) Inner ear hair cells of control embryos, at 5dpf, uptake the FM 4-64 vital dye, pointing out the correct functionality of transduction channel. (B, C) Inner ear hair cells of smpx-morphant embryos do not uptake the FM 4-64, indicating that the downregulation of smpx compromises the mechanotransduction event. Abbreviations are as follows: ac= anterior crista, lc= lateral crista, pc= posterior crista.
